Spirit Of The Andes: Puno – Cusco. The tale of a visitor.

The following morning we were woken up early by the most incredible sunrise I have ever seen in my life. The sun slowly peeked its way over the horizon and created a painting of oranges, pinks and purples that filled the sky. We enjoyed our breakfast on board as we watched the locals going about their day and animals grazing in the fields.

We arrived into Cusco around midday and were able to explore the city for a few hours before boarding the train again. Cusco is a beautiful city with so much history. We walked through the streets admiring the architecture, stopping in little shops here and there, until it was time to go back to the train station.

This time we were heading to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. The journey was just as stunning as the first leg, if not more so. We passed through small villages and saw locals going about their daily lives. The scenery changed from lush green fields to snow-capped mountains and everything in between.

Once we arrived in Aguas Calientes, we checked into our hotel and then headed out to explore the town. There wasn’t much to see but we enjoyed walking around and grabbing a bite to eat before heading back to our hotel for the night. Tomorrow is when we would be getting up early to catch the bus up to Machu Picchu!

I was so excited I could barely sleep.

The next morning we were up bright and early to catch the bus to Machu Picchu. The ride up was breathtaking as we wound our way through the mountains. When we arrived, we were blown away by the sheer size of the site. We spent the day exploring, walking through the ruins and taking in the incredible views.

It was an amazing experience and one that I will never forget.

I highly recommend the Belmond Andean Explorer Train if you are ever in Peru. It is a luxurious adventure that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime!
